Used iMac Buying Checklist

Inspect the iMac before paying. Check Apple Account removal, display, storage, keyboard, mouse, ports, Wi-Fi, speakers, camera, and performance.

Important: Never pay until the iMac is fully erased, removed from the seller’s Apple Account, and can reach the setup screen without asking for the seller’s password.

Step-by-Step Inspection

Check setup screen

The iMac should show the setup screen after reset. It should not ask for the seller’s Apple Account or password.

Check model and serial number

Go to Apple Menu  → About This Mac. Confirm model, year, chip/processor, RAM, serial number, and storage.

Inspect display

Check brightness, color, dead pixels, lines, flicker, screen burn, dark spots, and cracked glass.

Test keyboard and mouse

Type all keys, test trackpad or Magic Mouse, Bluetooth connection, charging, and pairing.

Test Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Connect to Wi-Fi and pair a Bluetooth device to make sure wireless hardware works.

Test camera, mic, and speakers

Open FaceTime/Photo Booth, test the webcam, record audio, and play music to test speakers.

Test all ports

Check USB-C/Thunderbolt, USB-A if available, headphone jack, Ethernet if available, and SD card slot if available.

Check performance

Open multiple apps, Safari, settings, and storage info. Watch for freezing, overheating, fan noise, or random restart.

Check physical condition

Inspect stand, hinge, frame, glass, power cable, dents, scratches, and signs of liquid damage.

Confirm accessories

Check included keyboard, mouse/trackpad, power cable, box, receipt, and any adapters promised by the seller.
