Used MacBook Buying Checklist

Inspect the MacBook before paying. Check Activation Lock, battery, display, keyboard, trackpad, ports, Wi-Fi, camera, speakers, and performance.

Important: Never pay until the MacBook is fully erased, removed from the seller’s Apple Account, and can reach the setup screen without asking for the seller’s password.

Fast Buying Rule

Only continue if the MacBook passes these major checks:

Step-by-Step Inspection

Check setup screen

The MacBook should show the setup screen after reset. It should not ask for the seller’s Apple Account or password.

Check model and serial number

Go to Apple Menu  → About This Mac. Confirm model, year, chip/processor, RAM, serial number, and storage.

Check battery health

Go to System Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Also check cycle count in System Information → Power.

Inspect display

Check brightness, color, dead pixels, flicker, screen lines, burn marks, dark spots, and cracked glass.

Test keyboard and trackpad

Type every key, test backlight, Touch ID, trackpad click, gestures, and cursor movement.

Test Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Connect to Wi-Fi and pair a Bluetooth device to make sure wireless hardware works.

Test camera, mic, and speakers

Open FaceTime/Photo Booth, test the webcam, record audio, and play music to test speakers.

Test all ports and charger

Check USB-C/Thunderbolt, MagSafe if available, HDMI, SD card slot, headphone jack, and charging.

Check performance

Open multiple apps and Safari tabs. Watch for freezing, overheating, fan noise, slow boot, or random restart.

Check physical condition

Inspect hinge, screen lid, keyboard deck, corners, bottom case, screws, dents, scratches, and signs of liquid damage.
